"How To Prepare to Face the Tough
Questions in Any Job Interview..."
|
By Dave Stewart
Even in a great job market -
competition for good jobs can be tough. With
today's job market, the competion often goes from
tough to brutal. How can you compete?
Surprisingly, the person who
lands the job may not be the best qualfied or even the
best fit for the position - they are often the person
who performs best at the interview. In other words...
the person who most effectively presents herself as the
best candidate for the job. How did that
happen?
If you're
thinking, there is no one "best" way to ace a job
interview or answer those tough questions - you are
absolutely correct. But there are principles you can
learn and adapt to your personal style that will help
you rise to the top of any candiate group with similar
qualifications. I'll put forth a few of them in this
article.
Principle #1: Act like you
want the job
Imagine going to an
interview without knowing what the position involves.
Suppose the job is 80% phone work and you perform
best on the floor - that is where you want to be. How
much enthusiasm could you
muster?
Compare the above scenario
with an interview for a job you've researched
thoroughly. You know what the position requires and it's
right up your alley. Deep
down you are chomping at the bit. You want to get over
with the interview and get to
work!
Which job do you think you'd
stand a better chance at? Okay, so some of you will
groan and say "I always get offered the first job!"
Sure, it happens, but most of the time you didn't do as
well in the second interview because you were afraid of
losing. Think about it.
There are proven ways to
prepare yourself to walk in to any interview you choose
fully charged with enough enthusiasm to infect the
entire interview.
Principle #2 Prepare to turn
the tables in the interview
Let's suppose things were
different. Not only are you conviced this is the perfect
position for you and you would accomplish great things
in this company - but suppose you were the only person
interviewing for the job? The company desperately wants
to hire you as much as you want to work for them.
Wouldn't that be sweet? What would your focus be
then?
Besides salary, you would be
interviewing them to see if the job was everything you
envisioned... right? So what's stopping
you?
If you've done your
homework, you know you can do this job and do it well.
Isn't this exactly what the interviewer is looking for?
So assume the job is yours IF you want it then
proceed on this basis. In other words... you interview
the company.
It's all about controlling
the interview. This may surprise you but most
interviews want you to do this. Take command (in a good
way) and lead the way. To do this you need to be the
person asking the questions.
Done right, this nearly
assures you of making the final cut. Which brings me to
the third and final
principle...
Principle #3 Prepare
the right questions to ask
So how do you know if a
question is the "right" one to ask? You want to limit
yourself to two basic types:
1) Questions you already
know the answer to
2) Questions you really
want an anwer to
The first type of question
allows you to show your stuff. These allow the
interviewer to see the depth of knoweldge you bring to
the table.
As you develop questions of
the second type - ask yourself what you will gain of
value from the answer to this. In my "Great Job System"
course, I say this "...a crude way to show you mean
business might be to ask whether the interviewer had the
authority to give you the job if this interview went
well."
I offer other examples but
the point is you want to ask bold questions about what
you are really interested in.
All of these topics are
covered in depth in my "Great Job System" course along
with several sure-fire ways to land an interview for the
jobs you really want to begin
with.
By taking a sounder approach to job interview
questions, you'll find yourself going into your next
interview with a confidence you never knew you could
muster. You may even feel more rested because now you no
longer need to cram for yet another "interview
exam"!
